The reason for the plankton and nutrients in the water is obvious.  The
glowing lichen and the plankton are involved in a symbiotic relationship. 
The lichen provide light for photosynthesis and the the plankton in turn
nourishes the lichen and fertilizes it.  The relationship keeps the lichen
growing strong and healthy.  The inhabitants of Ina depend on the lichen for
food, medicine and as a rudimentary light source.  Unfortunately, it is
harvested at the cost of the lives of the hundreds of slaves who toil in
these fields.  An idyllic peasant life it is not.
