It is actually less surprising than it could be that the inner sanctum in
the temple of earth is actually a structure with all of the loadbearing
elements of a giant, petrified tree.  It is odd, but in a certain way, it
makes a larger kind of sense.  The root structure of the tree is vast, and
relatively easily-climbable, given the circumstances.  The roots travel
vertically, but in a latticed manner that make traversing them possible.  
     A bright ball of golden light shimmers in the air.
