Immediately after the establishment of the tetrarchy, Diocletian erected
this great triple-passageway arch to commemorate the power of his kingdom.
The second-century reliefs of the arch are fashioned to honor himself and
his three emperors, and have been labeled, Fundator Quietus (bringer of
peace) and Liberator Urbis (liberator of the city). Roughly 60 feet in
height, the arch serves as an example of the monumental scale to which the
Palace of Diocletian has been built. To the left and right of the arch span
two equally high fortified walls which encase the complex. The archways to
your northwest, north, and northeast are the only entry ways to the palace.

To your left and right are more relief sculptures, the one to your left
shows four figures squatting in proportion and reminiscent of the the
tetrarch relief on the front side of the arch. The relief to your right is
very shallow, the forms are no longer fully modeled, and details are
incised. As you gaze up you notice the coffered arch ceiling, adorned with
sunken patterns, most likely used to reduced the force placed on the
keystone. Before you stands the great Palace of Diocletian, its central
section appears to include gardens, lecture halls, and other rooms, all
enclosed within a great concrete perimeter wall.

You come upon the large central reception area, the atrium. The roof
overhead is partially open to the sky, not only to admit light but also to
channel rainwater into a basin, where it is stored in cisterns for use by
the palace residents. Here the tetrarchs are able to greet their guests in
a pleasant and cool setting. Far to the north you can see the dome and
crown of the large Imperial Residence rising a hundred feet into the sky.
Continuing to your immediate north is the peristyle garden, the atrium
branches to your west and east. The Arch of Diocletian is to your south.

The area within the atrium has been left unencumbered, save for statues
commemorating local dignitaries and the four emperors, this is where daily
commerce is conducted and pedestrian traffic travels. The roof overhead is

be approximated anywhere else. The smoothed flagstone pavement walkways
enable pedestrians to cross from one side of the palace to the other without

the wheels of vehicles so that supplies could be brought to the shops,

The smooth pathway is made of a strange concrete, composed of lime
mortar, volcanic sand, water, and small stones. The resulting mix gives an
unusual black surface, complimenting the evergreen environment that borders
its sides. Two large walls to your north and south enclose the walkway.
From the size and texture you can tell that the back wall of the Diocletian
Baths is to your south. The walkway continues east and to your west you see
the long peristyle garden.

Famous for its hemicycle design and extraordinary number of shops, the
Arasta Marketplace has become the center point for commerce in the palace.
To your north you can see the covered intersection in which traffic filters
in all directions, the many shops allow residents to conduct all their
material affairs in one convenient location. The structures have an
exposed-brick facade, with brick pilasters and brick pediments. A stone
pathway running east and west can be seen to your south.

The basic unit shop is the taberna, the single-room store covered by a
barrel vault. Each taberna has a wide doorway, surmounted by a window,
which admits light to a wooden inner attic used to store goods. The

locker facility, currency deposit, food store, magic shop, post office,
general goods, and a training room.
