A True Account of the Founding of Colyon
by Vezam Pozov
Long ago, when Arien'dyth was still a wonder of drowish art and
practicality, we all worshipped the elemental Lord of Fire, Gath. We
prospered and grew as a city, always under the watchful eye of the Power of
Flame. We were happy and healthy, and thanked Him for every day we were
given.
Then the Cataclysm began.
Our cavern home began to topple. The domed ceilings of our native land
weakened and started to fall, chunk by chunk, bit by bit. Hundreds died and
entire districts of the city were lost as huge boulders broke loose and
tumbled down upon us. Those of us who remained faithful to Gath prayed with
all our hearts, knowing that He would shepard us through this disaster. But
there were others who secretly began to doubt.
It was they that brought upon us the True Cataclysm.
One day a demon came amongst them. Its name, it said, was Kal'Tor. It was a
cunning monster, and claimed that it could stop the mountain's collapse.
The Doubters were gullible and eager to believe the creature. So it led
them to a larger cavern, an unstable offshoot of our original home, and
showed them some form of unholy Geomancy that would repel the force of
gravity and hold up the cavernous ceiling. It led them to build a new city
there. It was much larger, but much less beautiful. It was an ordered
blight on the majesty of Arien'dyth, and we hated it.
The Doubters, by then, were a large portion of our original number, and
they went to live in New Arien'dyth. They left us in the now stable ruins
of our old home, for we would not be subjugated by a demon. Soon one demon
became many, as Kal'Tor's unholy brotherhood joined him. They commanded
worship in return for keeping the Geomantic magicks alive. They enslaved
their people and made them war against us in the heart of our mountain. Our
number grew smaller everyday.
