Despite the messy, scrawled writing in this diary the notes taken by one
of the Seamen are quite legible. Your attention is drawn to two of the
longest entries at the end of the book:
Hoffman came aboard at Sigil. He's a good sailor who looked tough and
wasn't afraid of discipline. Cap'n didn't trust the guy, I don't think. He
had no choice but to shove off and set sail with him because we had cargo
that couldn't just sit rotting in the hold. Four days later Hoffman began
to warm up to the crew, last night he was keen to share a half of rum with
us down in the galley. Cook didn't much like that. Hoffman asked some
odd questions this morning, I was scrubbing the forward cabin and he just
came in and started askin' questions about secret cargo and the Cap'n's
past. I could only tell him what the rest of us knew, the Cap'n has a
military history with some Lord and runs errands for him. He's one
intimidating man, I weren't about to lie to him.
I don't know what's going on around here but I saw Mr. Hoffman in some
argument with the guy manning the helm. One hell of a storm, the Powers
aren't looking down on us favourably tonight. I can barely stay standin',
the rum and the wind have seen to that. Maybe my eyes are tricking me.
Whatever was going on, the Helmsman didn't look happy. The guy never
drinks; he should loosen up once in a while. He has guts to stand up to
Hoffman like that, he looked about ready to punch the guy. I have to get
moving down to the hull, damn cargo rolling around.
Long description: A simple brown ledger has been tossed on the floor.
