The book is moth-eaten and dogeared, with water stains on the dark brown
leather of the cover and binding. The title of the book is obscured, but
appears to be something on the subject of demonology. Flipping through the
worn pages, you see large diagrams of invoking and evoking circles,
protective pentacles, ingredients and materials required for evocation of
demons and demon familiars, and some very disturbing renderings of several
differernt classes and specific demons. One demon in particular catches
your eye - a hideous visage, it looks like a human male of large stature but
instead of a mouth, it has a mass of writhing tentacles. Upon closer
examination you notice that the figure has two arms, and four tentacles
protruding from the side of its body. Beneath the figure is inscribed its
name: Melkor.
On the next page is a description of the demon and its history and powers -
you begin to read it but stop, as the vivid images the text brings
to mind are too realistic and frightening.
You are drawn back to the page by a footnote at the bottom, written in
a shaky hand: "Never evoke this demon - it is far too powerful for any mortal
being to control. Thus I have learned to my own peril, for the gate
will not close!"
