Baba Yaga is a creature of legend.  She can go from being the most evil of
ogresses to a harsh, but fair, crone who rights wrongs for those who deal
honestly with her.  Basically, she is a combination of ancient hag and
wise woman.  Mothers of naughty children would scold them with the threat
of Baba Yaga coming to take them away.  Sometimes, especially in her
ogress form, she would steal children and cook them in a pot.  She also
had her own unique home, a brown thatched hut perched atop a giant chicken
leg (yes, just one), that hopped continuously, and could fly from place to
place.  In this manner, Baba Yaga was there one minute and gone the next.
The first trick for anyone who sought a favor was to get the hut to stand
still long enough to enter.  This was usually accomplished by answering a
riddle from one of the skulls on the surrounding gate posts, or performing
a kindness for someone who knew the magic words.  Once inside, the seeker
was hardly "home free."  To enter Baba Yaga's presence could easily mean
death, and any request had a price.  She would set tasks that could not be
accomplished unless cleverness and often magic were involved.  For this
reason, she was credited with control of inspiration and creativity.  She
rewarded those who failed with death or transformation, but those who
succeeded were not only allowed to live, but also to have their request
granted.  For exceptional honesty and ability, she sometimes gave a boon
of her own "special" kind.  On winter nights, Baba Yaga brewed up storms
by flying through the night sky in a cauldron, or in a mortar with the
pestle as the rudder.  Whether or not she still lives today is a mystery.
