The vocalist is a position held in low regard in dwarven society, despite
being of critical importance; they are the musician in charge of keeping the
time and the beat when the mining squads are performing their work.  They
perform no excavating, they shovel nothing, they neither dig nor pile.  Yet,
they keep the rest of their squad working with the correcy synchronicity,
such that no pickaxes or shovels or more elaborate tools collide when many
dwarves focus on the same spot simultaneously.  As such, they are also in
charge of being the first line of defense whenever the dwarves dig
themselves into a hecuva's lair, or an ice dragon's cave, or whatever other
trouble it is that dwarves are so wont to wander into.  This device is their
