On the Shores of Lake Whompfish                        NW     N     NE

The hardpacked forest floor gives way to wet sand, and the then to the
dark waters of Lake Whompfish.  Although only a few hundred feed wide, the
murky waters are deep and show almost nothing, with visibility of only a
foot or two.  Brackish, choppy waves blow over the center of the lake, but
here on the side it is very calm, even allowing a few inches of translucency
before the water fades to black.  From the northeast, the flickering of a
small bonfire can be seen through the trees.
