This cramped little room is where the cook's helpers sleep when they are
allowed some rest.  Their lives are spent mostly in fear of the cook and his
skillet, and his many threats to use them to add flavor to the stew. 
Little-used bunks stand to the sides, the rest of the room cramped with
possessions.  
The camp cook stands here, surveying his domain.
'Sit yourselves down and eat, boys!' the camp cook exclaims. 'The company will deduct it from your pay.'
The mess hall rings with coarse laughter.
