The smell is indeed overwhelming as you step into the tunnel.  Ahead you
can hear the sounds of the hundreds of slaves that inhabit the rooms.  Slop
covers the floor from the meals that have been ungraciously spilled by
slaves and guards alike.  Although the slaves are expected to keep their
cells and living area clean, they don't even have the simplest of tools to
accomplish the task, and the trash litters the floor, making it nearly
impossible to see where you are stepping.
