This wide passage is one of the original passageways of the ancient
catacombs.  The stone walls are made from large slabs of granite and
limestone, and show the signs of severe weathering.  There is a musty smell
in the air from the dampness of the stone.  The lighting in this passage is
not as bright as in the upper levels of the catacombs as the old caretakers
of these catacombs used to carry torches when coming down to this level.  As
Besides your footsteps, the only other sound is the gentle dripping of water
from cracks in the walls.  The corridor makes a sharp turn here branching
off to the east and to the south.
