It is apparent that this section of the catacombs was hastily carved
out.  The walls and ceiling are very jagged and uneven, and the floor is
hard to walk on.  Your steps echo along the hallway, but while the sounds
propagate through the halls, your light cannot seem to penetrate the
darkness at all.  There is a strong odor coming from the south, and the
corridor becomes very chilly.  You get the feeling that whatever lies to the
south is powerful indeed.
