The forecastle of the ship is horribly cramped and smells distinctly of
musty body odour and rotting foodstuffs.  There are tiny portholes in the
hull which are encrusted with sea spray and barely allow any light in. 
Bunks line the walls, each bed fitted with a thin sheet and pillow.  This
hardly looks like a comfortable existence; it is easy to pity the poor
seamen who are forced to live in such conditions.
