Decomposing corpses rest in niches carved into the stone walls. 
Grotesque skeletal remains with rotting linen stretched across blackened
bones surround you.  The lighting, provided largely by oil lamps, is
entirely fitting for these rather mediocre quality surroundings.  The soil
on which you stand has become worn with the passing years, indicating the
presence of recent visitors.  Along the walls you notice the skeletal
remains of those unable to find an exiting catacomb passage.
