Part of the old village, Arch Lane was originally a private drive leading
from what is now Lewis Street to the Flying Buttress Inn.  When Mayor Lewis
managed to begin the building of the Arch of the Heavens, the small road was
extended to meet the western leg of the arch.  Finally, years later when the
wall was built to encompass the city, the drive was extended to meet Bastion
Road to the east.  The Iron Thimble lies to the south.
