Deep ruts cut a road through the grassy plain, marking the passage of the
heavy sledges carrying huge logs from the remaining forests to the logging
camp to be processed.  In the short summer months the road is a sea of
sticky mud, making travel almost impossible.  Over the winter water is
poured out onto the road, making thick layers of solid ice capable of
supporting great weights.  As difficult as this might sound for travel, it
is probably a vast improvement over the mud.  Looking into the camp, you see
squat buildings constructed of massive logs huddled together against the
freezing wind and steeply sloped roofs braced against heavy snows.  
A lumberjack walks through the camp, his axe resting across one shoulder.
