Thick sections of timber rest on blocks, waiting for the next pair of
competitors to step forward.  The churned-up ground is evidence of how
popular this event is among the lumberjacks.  Heavy sections of already
chopped logs are piled nearby, and axes of various sizes and weights lean
against makeshift seats and benches as men wait their turn.
