A Semicircular Apse - N - (-------------------------------------------------) - <---(M)---> - - - - Stuccoed vaults, mosaic floors of both black and white and polychrome, marble-veneered walls, and this colossal statue decorate the room. From its position in the apse the iconic image of the emperor dominates the interior space of the basilica. The thirty foot high enthroned statue is composed of a brick core, a wooden torso covered with bronze, and head and limbs of marble. Authority captured in stone, the colossal size, the eyes directed at no person or thing of this world, all combine to produce the formula of overwhelming power appropriate to the exalted position of Diocletian. A Diocletian scholar who studies law, reads a manuscript before you.
