The workmanship of this staircase is amazing.  Every single stair is cut
at right angles, and it descends in a perfect circle around a thin but
sturdy axis.  As you look again at the alcoves in the walls, to your
astonishment, you see that the statues in them are not made of crystal at
all!  Instead, they appear to be crystal-studded statues made of some
substance that seems to be akin to that of a soft-shell crab.
