This is the end of the wide crescent encircling the molten pit.  At this
end the chain lift that spans the entire length of the pit is coming up out
of the molten ore below bringing with it the key element of draconian
metalworking.  The intense heat radiating from below would indicate that a
fall from here would lead to a sure death.
