A pair of boots are discarded at the base of the great ship's main mast. 
The toe of the left boot has been sheared off.  A barrel of fresh water
stands against the mast, the ladle frozen in place.  The water is completely
frozen through and through and has burst the sides of the barrel basically
creating a giant ice block encased in wood slats.  A ladder leads upwards to
the main crow's nest.
