The hardpacked forest floor gives way to wet sand and then to the dark
waters of Lake Whompfish.  Although only a few hundred feet wide, the murky
waters are deep and show almost nothing, with visibility of only a foot or
two.  Brackish, choppy waves blow over the center of the lake, but here on
the side it's very calm, even allowing a few inches of translucency before
the water fades to black.
