You are at the bottom of a red, luxuriously soft, carpeted staircase. 
Silver candelabras set into niches on either side of the walls provide a
soft light.  The occasional flake of plaster drifts gently to the floor,
falling from the ceiling high above you in response to a muted banging
coming from upstairs.  An elegantly-decorated entry hall lies to the east.
