You are at the top of a red, luxuriously soft, carpeted staircase. 
Silver candleabras set into niches on either side of the walls provide a
soft light.  The occasional flake of plaster floats gently to the steps in
response to a muted shaking of the walls.  It seems to be coming from the
hallway to your west.
