Noisy and crowded at mealtimes, the mess hall is almost empty the rest of
the day.  While the noon meal is brought to the workers out in the timber,
morning and evening meals are taken here -- and the cost deducted from their
pay, of course.  The food is hot and plentiful; what it might lack in
quality is more than made up in quantity.  Over it all, the cook rules with
an iron hand, brandishing a cast iron skillet.  Plank tables sized for
giants run the length of the long narrow room.  
     A long trestle table is lined with benches.
