This is the heart of the clock tower, where the intricate machinery that
controls the massive timepiece resides.  Huge spoked gears and large iron
and wooden rods are continually moving, making a loud din of clicks and
whirrs.  Directly before you, providing the dim light through which you can
see all this, is the face of the clock, reversed, the backwards arabic
numerals a disturbing sight to your sense of order.  There is a door to the
west and an opening in the clockface to the north that permits you to go out
onto it.  An elaborate wrought-iron staircase winds downwards through the
clock tower.
