Atrium - N - (-------------------------------------------------) W <---(M)---> E - S - The area within the atrium has been left unencumbered, save for statues commemorating local dignitaries and the four emperors, this is where daily commerce is conducted and pedestrian traffic travels. The roof overhead is partially open to the sky, not only to admit light but also to channel rainwater into a basin, where it is stored in cisterns for use by the palace residents. The peristyle aisle stretches north, and the atrium continues east and west. The East Arch of Diocletian is to your south. A Diocletian commoner goes about his daily chores here.
