Beneath the Middle Arch of Diocletian - N - (-------------------------------------------------) - <---(M)---> - - S - To your left and right are more relief sculptures, the one to your left shows four figures squatting in proportion and reminiscent of the the tetrarch relief on the front side of the arch. The relief to your right is very shallow, the forms are no longer fully modeled, and details are incised. As you gaze up you notice the coffered arch ceiling, adorned with sunken patterns, most likely used to reduced the force placed on the keystone. Before you stands the great Palace of Diocletian, its central section appears to include gardens, lecture halls, and other rooms, all enclosed within a great concrete perimeter wall. A child runs about playing tag. An obsidian gargoyle is here guarding the entrance to the arch.
