This wandering space, with its diverse vistas and ornamented surfaces,
functions as the fragile 'fill' between the great piers that support the
structure.  High above you, to your east and west, you can see the upper
level floors that circle the domed central nave.  Your eyes follow the walls
up toward the ribs vaults of the elevated ceiling, which have a kind of
architectural embroidery, they pull into fan shapes with pendant keystones
resembling stalactites.  Elaborate patterns of the marble floor, while very
decorative and fancy, appear to direct traffic north towards the enormous
tetrarch chamber far off in the distance.
