Further up the subtle gurgling of water can be heard as it absorbs the
sound of approaching footsteps.  Vague pinpoints of light can be seen
winking in and out above the horizon of fog.  The air begins to smell crisp
as it loses its salty luster and a warmth fills the path.  Thoughts like
whispers of shadows float intangibly through speaking of lost places and
people and of times yet to come.  The coral steps grow sharper as they near
a watery ledge in the middle of the monument.
