Dome-Covered Nave NW N NE (-------------------------------------------------) W <---(M)---> E SW S SE Although the church is essentially a eight-sided building, it has features not found in any other churches you have seen. Perhaps most obvious is the addition of a second apse on the south side of the building. The origin and purpose of this feature has never been explained satisfactorily. Above your head is a dome covered inner octagon, light filtered in from the windows surrounding it plays over the glittering mosaics and glowing marbles that cover the building's complex surfaces, producing an effect of inspired tranquillity. The octagon design extends in every direction, with apses to your north and south, and columned niches to your west and east. A diocletian choir member praises with open mouth. The High Priestess of the church conducts daily devotions here.
