Crossing through the thermocline, the temperature skyrockets to an almost
unbearable level.  It doesn't seem possible to sweat underwater, but the
feeling is there.  A large cavern up ahead appears to be natural and
untouched by tools.  Wierd shadows play against the walls caused by some
sort of radiant heat source.  Looking back up the tunnel one can barely make
out the mine cart in the gloom.  
A salamander slave master laughs cruelly at his suplicant's misery.
