Leveling and Questing in Materia Magica

Novices

Lasler can go by seriously quickly if you either:

  1. Know what you are doing
  2. Have someone who does know what they're doing helping you along.
  3. Follow a guide to get in, get done what needs to be done, and get out.

Starting out in Lasler, you should be aware of items you may purchase to boost stats without having to train them. Practices are hard to come by, when you train your starting skills, so stat boosting items are a must. The Galbo (Galbo is crafting a pair of gauntlets here.) has several items that are important. Research is key. The higher your stats, the higher your gain per level will be. Practices, level betters, hp, sp, and stamina depend on them.

On leveling forms

It is always more efficient to level in forms. The reason is that while you do lose some exp, you gain multitudes in damage. In first class, you can often get away with leveling solo, especially if you're a fighter class. Beyond that, however, leveling solo can be a pain. The optimal leveling form consists of two to four people. Five is okay. Six or more is a bit crowded.

First Class

Leveling

First Class Questing

If you choose to power level to 60, and then do your questing, Lady Templeton is the most popular QM. Of course that is debatable, and subject to opinion, but I've found and heard from many others that she is by far the best rewards for questing first class. Where you quest before level 60 is purely your choice... you can't quest at Templeton until level sixty so Tellerium if you choose to stick to Avros. Agrippa, Vashir, and Vendredi are all three popular choices as well.

Second Class

Leveling

  • 61-90: Wilds near Sigil and Rune – Tigers and birds in the wilds west of Sigil (the light green *** areas) and the wilds southwest of Rune (the dark green %%% areas). Easy to solo and still good for forms.
  • 61-113: Wilds - Giant hawks in mountainous regions. Easy to solo and still good for forms.
  • 61-120: Palace of Diocletian - Everything except the soldiers and bees. Do not enter Dio without being invisible, because the bees will jump you and then call backup! Regardless, Dio is the second class leveling hotspot and you can nearly always find a form there. Just bring your wizard's cloak!
  • 61-120: Vospire - The street mobs. Vospire is great for solo or form leveling. However, be aware of Town Square (NPK), earthquakes, and the ash dragon. You'll want levitation and invisibility here.
  • 61-120: Wilds outside Tellerium - Hopping frogs southeast of Tellerium. Very nice solo mob, especially for rogues.
  • 61-120: Wilds outside Sigil Realty - A gnome druid (A gnome druid is here, gathering wild herbs.). Very nice solo mob.

Questing

Second class you are introduced to an entirely different quest timer. You will be able to receive two quests from one QM per 2-hour period, seven total. Because of this, Sepharia is a great continent to quest on. Two quests at Vashir, two at Agrippa, and two at Undya. By the time your timer is up for Vashir, you should be done at Undya. Also, while questing on Sepharia, you are right there by Rune and can do crystal quests every hour.

Third Class

Leveling

  • 121-135: Beltane Wilds - Hell puppies on Beltane wilds; i.e., look in the light green *** areas around Pirate's Cove (NPK). Hell puppies are excellent EXP at second class, and early third. Keep a constant eye on WHERE if you choose to level on Beltane, unless you don't mind being PKed.
  • 121-180: The Lakes of Alyria – Kraken on the lakes. There are several different types. Consider them first. Depending on class, a good third classer might be able to take both types of krakens. It is still a really good idea to consider them first.
  • 121-180: Templeton Castle (in Templeton – The mobs wandering the halls of the castle. Guests and visitors. Watch out for the CPK section in the middle of the castle (Malcolm's Practice Field).
  • 121-180: Irda Isle Caverns - Irda Isle Caverns seem to be the third class leveling hotspot. They are not as high traffic as Dio in second class, but nearly always you can find someone to form with. The caverns are full of various mobs and the best way for each individual character to find out which works best for them is simply to go in and try it. Don't take on the bored guards without a form. Great $$$ here.
  • 121-180: The castle in Vospire - Mobs in Vospire castle. These work well for solo or form leveling.
  • 150-180: Beltane Wilds - Desert kinsmen on east Beltane, desert part (NPK). Keep a constant eye on WHERE if you choose to level on Beltane, unless you don't mind being PKed.

Questing

Some people tend to like the Sepharia quest formula for third as well. Two quests at Vashir, two at Agrippa, and two at Undya. By the time your timer is up for Vashir, you should be done at Undya. Also, while questing on Sepharia, you are right there by Rune and can do crystal quests every hour.

Others like the Templeton/Tellerium quest camp at 180. They are not quite as over-rewarded as they used to be, but they are still pretty good.

Fourth Class

Leveling

  • 181-215: The castle in Vospire - Mobs in Vospire castle continue giving full experience until around level 215.
  • 181-230: Underground Wilds – Okapi and albino lions on the sparse plains southeast of Decara. Then snapping turtles (slash immune) along the NPK coastline of Oceanus Decarus. Have invisibility, because the wandering spirits are aggro.
  • 181-240: Catacombs of Shame - These "Temp Cats" are accessible by telling A temple priest (A temple priest of the Holy Order stands before you.) "Restore the order of the Tame" in the Temple of the Holy Order (Temple Altar) in Templeton. Kill everything in the hallways of the Cats, usually in a form. There's no need to go into PK areas (CPK or NPK) as there's nothing to kill there. Ghasts paralyze if the tank isn't invisible. Leveling in the Cats will make your alignment skyrocket.

Archon

Leveling

Dude, you're an archon. The leveling mobs come to you. If you don't understand how this works, how did you get to this level?

All kidding aside, you have 3 sources of archon points. Mobs (hunters and run mobs), archon tokens, and marks.

Practices can be obtained from depositing tokens, questing, and crystal quests. The archon-level (50k gold) crystal quests are quite lucrative, averaging about 10 pp. You'll need some familiarity with the UG wilds and the FP, as well as a way to get to them.
