The track skill allows the user to find a player or NPC in the same area as them. This skill is often used to determine if someone (NPC or player) is alive. If the track interprets the target string you give it as a NPC or player in the current area it will report immediately \'You begin searching for a trail...\' if your track roll succeeds. If it cannot find a target it will immediately report that it cannot find a trail. If it succeeds, it reports the direction from the room to the target (and if the \'auto\' argument is used, takes a step in that direction before repeating the process. Here is my theory on how track works: once track determines the target you give it, it does a set of random walks from your current location with a number of steps based on your level and the skill level of track, stopping if it hits a room with a no-track flag. If it doesn\'t find the target in that time, it reports a failure. If it finds the target, it collapses the path to the shortest version and reports the direction. This is why track does not work well on the VMap, because most rooms have 8 exits, making random walks loop back much more often.
